We are seeking a Senior Tool Engineer to join our team in our Canoga Park, CA facility.


In this role, you will develop and design a variety of tools and equipment required to support the manufacturing, quality and test operations. This position performs feasibility analysis of special tool plans; create tool concepts and drawings utilizing environmental health and safety procedures, tool standards manuals and sound engineering practices; initiate fabrication and assist with inspection and operational check out of special tools; and resolve tooling problems encountered during tool usage.


This position may be filled at this level posted or one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Day-to-day responsibilities will include the following:


40% - Evaluate tooling requests, develop design requirement conceptualize innovative solutions and develop estimates for design, fabrication and materials: The candidate will utilize design and business software (ProE, CATIA, and/or other similar CAD/virtual manufacturing tools/software, MS Office applications such as Word, Excel) to develop, design, review and fabricate tooling for manufacturing, testing and inspecting hardware.


30% - Review tool drawings for manufacturability, tolerancing and stack up. 

  • Select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies.
  • Work with Tool Designers to produce sound and affordable tool designs that will meet engineering requirements.
  • Incorporate material, process and factory best practices into the design of the tool.

15% - Coordinate with procurement the placement of purchase orders for tooling:

  • Develop the cost estimates for material and labor when fabricating tools.
  • Initiate statement of work to flow requirements to the vendor.
  • Work with suppliers to answer or advise on technical questions concerning interpreting the drawing or fabricating the tool.

15% - Support shop floor on use of tools and assist in validating the fit, form and function of the tooling to the interfacing hardware.


Requires a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline and nine (9) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.


Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to read and interpret conceptual designs, drawings, and related specifications.
  • Must have knowledge of machining theory and can apply and interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Must have excellent math skills and have the ability to perform mathematical calculations using shop math, including geometric and trigonometric formulas to compute and locate dimensions, angles, contours, convex and concave surfaces, reference lines, center points and machining guidelines.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels. The job may require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. The job may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization. Depending on the location of the position, visual certification requirement may apply.
