Aerojet Rocketdyne, a premier aerospace and defense company specializing in missile and space propulsion, is seeking an experienced engineer as a key contributor in our thermal analysis group. This Thermal Engineering Specialist will be located at our office in Huntsville, Alabama. In this role, you will conduct thermal analysis primarily for solid propulsion systems and components and serve as the senior thermal specialist in providing thermal analysis support to develop the analysis techniques and hot fire tests to solid propulsion system.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

70% - Perform engineering thermal analysis primarily for solid propulsion systems and components using in-house or non-proprietary thermal ablation analysis tools or commercial software tools such as ANSYS or CHAR. Typical responsibilities include the planning and cost estimating for the thermal analysis tasks, coordinate thermal analysis efforts with chief engineer and IPT team members, pre-test predictions and post-test analysis of test data to validate component and system analysis models. Coordinate the implementation of thermal solutions for propulsion applications with the design engineers, structural analysts, and manufacturing engineers in a multi-discipline project team.


20% - Design and support verification tests of propulsion systems and components. Develop test systems and strategies, specify instrumentation and analyze test results. Participate in team meetings, technical reviews; design reviews, peer reviews, problem solving meetings and customer technical interchange meetings.


10% - Produce thermal analysis reports and make presentation of analysis results to both internal and external customers. Provide technical guidance to junior thermal analysts.


Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering (or related discipline) and at least 9 years directly applicable technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.


Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in team leadership is required.
  • Candidate must be proficient in using thermal analysis tools in thermal ablation analysis of solid rocket propulsion.
  • Master's or higher degree preferred.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
