We are bringing 800 new jobs to Huntsville, Alabama and building a state-of-the art advanced manufacturing facility where we will produce our industry-leading solid propulsion systems and our next-generation rocket engine.  Our efforts to build on our existing presence in Huntsville are in full swing. Defense-related program management, engineering and related support positions will be housed at this site, home of Aerojet Rocketdyne's Defense headquarters and Rocket Shop Defense Advanced Programs.

Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks Sr. Software Engineers for this Huntsville, AL location.   Position contributes to the development of embedded real-time control systems software and/or application software by performing software requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit test and integration tasks. The ideal candidate would have extensive experience in embedded and real-time software development and the C/C++ programming language. Candidate will receive and further facilitate technical guidance among other resources supporting these efforts. Candidate will ensure documentation of software developed for these efforts.


Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under minimal direction:


90% - As a lead and contributor to a software development team performing requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit test and integration of embedded real-time control system and/or application software. Participate in the development of software development documentation. Support internal and customer reviews of software development work products. Support the preparation of program milestone reviews: SRR, CoDR, PDR, CDR and TRR.


10% - Support software development process improvement by assessing software process metrics,

identifying process gaps, creating and evaluating process improvement options, reviewing and improving metric definition and collection methods, evaluating industry tools and other resources to promote the continued growth and maturity of the software organization at Aerojet Rocketdyne.



Requires a BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering and five (5) or more years of engineering experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.


US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.


Experience in the following areas required:

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded real-time and/or application software development
  • 5+ years of experience developing C/C++ code
  • Software Development team leadership
  • Understanding of CMMI Level 3 and greater software processes preferred


Desired Requirements:

  • C /C++ experience is critical.
  • Real-time OS (vxWorks/Integrity) experience
  • Communications Protocols (1553, TCP/IP, & ScramNet)
  • Knowledge of assembly / machine-level languages, JAVA, Microsoft Visual Studio IDE, Eclipse and Tortoise SVN.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills


Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
