We are seeking a Communications Specialist for our Huntsville, Alabama, office. Ideal candidate has extensive public relations/communications campaign experience and the ability to represent the Communications Department as the central point of contact for various internal and external communication processes and projects.  Strong local business and community connections in the greater Huntsville region are preferred to support the company’s expanded presence and community involvement in the area.

 

In this role, the candidate will work closely with Huntsville leadership and serve as the strategic lead for the site’s integrated communications needs, as well as be responsible for overall program implementation and execution.  In addition to providing Huntsville-specific support, the candidate will serve as an extension of the Corporate Communications Department, providing general Client Manager communication’s support for the company as a whole.  Strong writing abilities and knowledge of AP Style a must.  

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under limited general direction, the Communications Specialist determines approach to objectives and projects, demonstrating an understanding and application of communications principles, concepts and practices to meet the objectives of assignments:

 

75% - Develops and executes metrics-driven internal and external outreach programs aligned with company and department goals, making recommendations to ensure that projects appropriately reflect Aerojet Rocketdyne's branding and strategic direction.

 

Interacts with Communications team co-workers, program/functional leaders and site management to provide strategic counsel and develop communications deliverables to include written collateral (press releases, employee communication and marketing collateral) as well as support for graphics and multi-media presentations, and photography and video support as needed.

 

Duties may include supporting media relations, special events/VIP tours, social media presence, government affairs, crisis communications, public speaking opportunities, corporate responsibility and community relations efforts, video script development, tradeshow support, speech writing, web content development, special projects and other communications related activities.

 

25% - Performs additional duties as assigned, assisting in various other projects within the Communications department. Assists team with consultation, documentation and "best practices" procedures related to the most efficient enterprise multimedia and communication deployment.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism or related discipline and ten (10) years of directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

US Citizenship Only Required. Dual Citizenship does not meet job qualifications.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others; have a keen attention to detail, and communicate effectively. Interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively interface with all levels of personnel, both within the Communications Department and throughout the company.
  • Skilled in effective scheduling and prioritizing work flow. 
  • Ability to analyze data of a confidential and/or sensitive nature.
  • Must be flexible enough to fill in where required on demand.
  • Ability to drive and possess a valid driver's license and meet automobile insurability requirements of the company.
  • Some travel may be required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Background in public relations, community outreach, government affairs and/or English grammar and composition. 
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Experienced in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, [others?]

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
