Aerojet Rocketdyne in Los Angeles, California is seeking a Material and Process (M&P) Engineer to join our liquid rocket propulsion engineering team with the knowledge, drive, enthusiasm, leadership, and initiative to enhance our materials and process capability.
The engineer will join a diverse team of M&P engineers responsible for all M&P aspects of our liquid engine propulsion product lines. This includes selection and development of metals and metals processing, joining and finishing processes, materials requirements management, production floor support, and failure investigations as required.
Under general supervision and following established policies, this individual performs professional engineering assignments requiring full use and application of standard engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Provides Materials Engineering discipline support to engineering team lead. The position requires some independent professional judgment and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts.
60% - Support Design Process: Working under the direction of senior M&P staff the engineer will support product designs by providing material selection recommendations, reviewing design drawings, reviewing manufacturing planning, and supporting Engineering Review Boards; participating in design reviews and customer technical interchange meetings; evaluating suppliers and their materials and processes to ensure they meet requirements.
30% - Support Product and Process Development: Working as part of a product development team, the engineer will conduct a variety of material tasks, such as evaluating metal forming processes, stress corrosion, corrosion resistance, fuel compatibility, metallic joining techniques; identifying advanced materials; leading development of criteria and establishing standards for experimental, test and/or production purposes; performing laboratory and manufacturing experiments; and interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting on data and processes.
10% - Perform other duties as assigned.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline required and two years' directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in Materials Engineering preferred. Strong project planning, critical thinking, written and oral communication skills are required. Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Candidate must be experienced using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This position requires the ability to read, interpret, prepare, and issue drawings and related specifications, as well as the ability to use test and other measurement equipment. Six Sigma knowledge and experience in the aerospace industry are desired.
US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
Employee may need to work near moving mechanical parts and in loud working conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. Laboratory work will also be required to evaluate materials and failure analysis.
In addition, employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat.
