Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Software Engineering Specialist for our Huntsville, AL location.


In this role, you will contribute to the development of embedded real-time control systems software and/or application software by performing software requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit test and integration tasks. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in embedded and real-time software development and the C/C++ programming language. Candidate will receive and further facilitate technical guidance among other resources supporting these efforts. Candidate will ensure documentation of software developed for these efforts.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Work is performed under minimal direction.


90% - As a lead and contributor to a software development team performing requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit test and integration of embedded real-time control system and application software. Participate in the development of software development documentation. Support internal and customer reviews of software development work products. Support the preparation of program milestone reviews: SRR, CoDR, PDR, CDR and TRR.


10% - Support software development process improvement by assessing software process metrics, identifying process gaps, creating and evaluating process improvement options, reviewing and improving metric definition and collection methods, evaluating industry tools and other resources to promote the continued sustainment, growth and maturity of the software organization at Aerojet Rocketdyne.


Requires a BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering and nine (9) or more years of engineering experience in a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Solid verbal and written communication skills expected.


US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.


Additional Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded real-time control software development, including Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C).
  • 3+ years of experience directly interfacing software to hardware components.
  • 3+ years of experience in application software development.
  • 9+ years of experience developing C/C++ code.
  • Prior experience with I/O driver development.
  • Software Development team leadership.
  • Exposure to CMMI Level 3 software processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Real-time OS (vxWorks/Integrity) experience.
  • Communications Protocols (1553, TCP/IP, & ScramNet).
  • Experience with Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) systems.
  • Knowledge of assembly/machine-level languages, JAVA, Microsoft Visual Studio IDE, Eclipse and Tortoise SVN.
  • Understanding of CMMI Level 3 and greater software processes preferred.



Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
