Overview

This position supports Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Avionics Engineering organization and reports to the Director of Avionics, Electronics Design. The candidate for this position will be responsible for management of high functioning engineering team that develops reliable electronic products in support of Aerojet Rocketdyne programs. The candidate will manage or support the Avionics management team in managing all aspects of electrical/electronics design for development projects and tasks for assigned programs including:

  • Understanding and refining system/component requirements.
  • Defining and controlling electronics development program scope.
  • Facilitating effective schedules and budget performance in accordance with applicable contractual and Aerojet Rocketdyne policies.
  • Subcontractor or supplier technical support.
  • Cross-functional coordination to insure effective transfer of engineering design to manufacturing.
  • Assures through the assigned program team, that contract performance responsibility is properly delegated to performing organizations and outside suppliers.
  • Contributes and supports implementation of business development plans for existing and follow-on production programs including proposal development, submittal, and negotiation.

 The candidate will support the overall business/technical relationship with customers. Provide support (mentorship, championing, leadership and participation) in company Operational Excellence activities. Must be able to provide technical guidance to company personnel on high performance electronic control systems and supporting technologies such as compact electric power and electronic sensors.

 

Position will be located at Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) Los Angeles site, but will be required to provide functional management to offsite team members in Huntsville, AL and Sacramento, CA in a matrix capacity.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

25% - Attain and deploy electronics engineering design resources that support program demand to achieve technical objectives and program performance goals. Maintain and forecast staff assignments in accordance with changing program demand.

 

5% - Manage Electronics Engineering Development Laboratory to provide prototype assembly and test facility that operates in compliance with AR policies and regulations.

 

25% - Support program execution through technical leadership, staff support and program planning contribution.

 

15% - Support Engineering functional leadership to create and execute initiatives to increase engineering staff technical capability and responsiveness which includes electronics development process effectiveness, measurement and improvement.

 

10% - Work with New Business development to capture new programs. Support scope, schedule and cost estimation for program proposals. Define and implement technology development objectives and strategies that support program continuation or entrance to emerging markets.

 

10% - Perform staff management, team building and personnel development tasks.

 

10% - Perform travel to other Aerojet Rocketdyne sites.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 14 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

 

Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7 years of directly related experience in functional management.
  • 9 years of direct technical leadership experience in the development of electronic products for military / aerospace application requiring operation in demanding environments. 5 years of direct experience in high performance electronic control system product development preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management experience to include: muliti-function team leadership, financial planning, risk management and schedule development/execution.
  • Experience for process controlled engineering development which includes process assessment and improvement.
  • Mature business communication skills in support of staff management and business operations.
  • Advanced comprehension of organizational structure and behavior trends.
  • Flexibility in travel accommodation preferred.

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
