  • Overview

    Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Senior Materials Engineer with both metallics and non-metallics experience to support new product development, as well as ongoing production programs (RS-25, ORION, Lithium Ion Battery, Dreamchaser, and in-space programs). In addition, in-depth knowledge of electrical fabrication materials and processes in accordance with both industry and NASA specifications is mandatory for the position. This position will be located at our facility in Canoga Park, CA (Los Angeles area).

     

    This current opening may be filled at this level as posted or at one level higher.

    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    Under limited general direction:

     

    60% - Provide electrical fabrication materials and processes support for the design, development and production of both solid and liquid rocket motor systems. NASA has specific workmanship standards for electronic assembly which will utilize your thorough understanding of this area from engineering requirements, to shop floor and quality perspectives. Interface competently with knowledgeable customers using your manufacturing experience, as well as engineering know-how, knowledge of common defects, and ability to interpret requirements. Specialized training in some of these requirements is required by NASA, and the candidate will be expected to provide training to the suppliers. In-depth knowledge in technical areas such as soldering materials and processes, circuit board fabrication, defects and acceptance criteria, component selection and failure analysis of electronic components, bonding, plating, potting, corrosion, insulation, conformal coating and processing are all required. Interface regularly with suppliers within these areas of expertise.

     

    30% - Perform engineering analysis of nonconforming hardware including coordination of analysis for disposition of Material Review Board documents.

     

    10% - Conduct failure investigations for root causes.

    Requirements

    Requires a Bachelor's degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering and at least 5 years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).

     

    US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

     

    Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

    • Strong project planning, technical leadership, written and oral communication skills are required.
    • Must have in-depth knowledge of electrical fabrication materials and processes (such as soldering, circuit board fabrication, potting, etc.) in accordance with both industry and NASA specifications.
    • Advanced degree desired.

     

    Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

    Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto.  May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
