We are seeking a Communications Specialist for our Washington, D.C. office. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

 

We are looking for someone with strong writing abilities and experience with social media management and media relations.

 

Under minimal direction, the Communications Specialist serves as the point of contact for various processes in the creation of internal and external communications materials and projects designed to meet outreach goals throughout the enterprise.

 

In particular, this position will serve as chief speechwriter for the President and CEO and will provide communication support to other senior executives for internal and external speaking engagements and media opportunities. Communications include external speeches; letters to customers, suppliers, congress, and other government officials; news releases, editorials and op-eds; executive talking points for board, leader, and employee meetings; and other communication vehicles as needed. Must be able to write in a concise, compelling manner, and must be able to translate technical and high-level information into consumable content.

 

The successful individual will also manage the company’s social media presence across numerous platforms.

 

The Communications Specialist must maintain a professional style of online interaction, stay current on social media trends and technology and have general knowledge of practices, techniques and standards within the communications discipline.

 

This current opening may be filled at this level or at one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

70% - Research, develop, write, and coordinate executive talking points and speeches, often under tight deadlines. Candidate must be able to write speeches and talking points in the voices of the company’s most senior (C-level) executives. Candidate must be able to comfortably interact with the company’s senior leadership. This position will entail extensive interaction with other communication team members, operating divisions, and management to make strategic recommendations about content and timing to ensure that communication products appropriately reflect Aerojet Rocketdyne's interests and priorities.

 

Duties may also include (but are not limited to): Video script writing for executives, newsletter content development, and management of special projects and events, as well as other communications activities as required.

 

Candidate must be willing to travel across country approximately 50% of the work month to interact with and support the CEO and other senior executives during speeches and presentations.

 

25% - Manage the company’s social media presence across numerous platforms. Handle social media monitoring and engagement surrounding news and information about the company’s milestones, partnerships and contracts on various social media platforms.

 

5% - Performs additional duties as assigned including, but not limited to, assisting in various other projects within the Communications department.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Communications/Journalism or an applicable field and 10 years of directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to work well with others; have good organization skills; have a keen attention to detail, and communicate effectively.
  • Must be flexible enough to fill in where required on demand.
  • Ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, enthusiasm and creativity, and will be able to provide samples of written work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of AP Style guidelines.
  • Ability to drive and possess a valid driver's license and meet automobile insurability requirements of the company.
  • Standard PC computing skills including MS Office products and an understanding of Windows OS.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Thorough and consistent with a personal desire to follow existing development guidelines and standards.
  • Ability to travel within the US 50% per month.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will require significant nationwide travel. Candidate should expect to spend at least 50% of the work month traveling to any of our 15 sites located in 9 different states. Primary travel will be between our offices in Washington D.C. (Rosslyn, Virginia) and Los Angeles, California.

 

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Will require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. This position may be expected to work varying hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
