  • Engineer, Mechanical Design

    Location US-FL-Jupiter
    Job ID
    Engineering - Mechanical Engineering
  • Overview

Aerojet Rocketdyne is a world-recognized aerospace and defense leader providing propulsion and energetics to its space, missile defense, strategic, tactical missile and armaments customers throughout domestic and international markets. Aerojet Rocketdyne offers a complete line of propulsion products for launch vehicles, missile defense, and advanced hypersonic propulsion.

Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering design team in our Jupiter, FL location. This position requires the application of mechanical design skills and knowledge to develop hardware designs of critical components and assemblies for liquid rocket engines and hypersonic propulsion systems and resolve manufacturing and operational issues. The candidate will develop component designs used in extreme operational environments (cryogenics, high pressure, high rotational speed, and high heat fluxes and thermal gradients). Prior experience in the design of complex mechanical systems is desired.

This position may be filled at the level posted or at the next higher level.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Working under general supervision, the candidate will perform mechanical design engineering assignments requiring application of advanced principles, theories and concepts to develop hardware designs for launch vehicle and missile propulsion systems.

50% - Perform design tasks that contribute to the development of components and systems for turbomachinery, injectors, combustion chambers, nozzles, inlets, valves, ancillary hardware, and support equipment. Develop engineering models and drawing requirements to align with manufacturing processes and functional and operational requirements. Evaluate technical input from hardware suppliers and work with a cross functional team on producibility improvements and cost savings. Participate in trade studies and preliminary design using analysis tools and CAD models.

20% - Perform or coordinate thermal and structural analysis for predicting component and system level performance in the design of the products. Interact with manufacturing to assure hardware is producible.

20% - Prepare or check engineering drawings with associated geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.  Actively integrate with supporting engineering disciplines and participate in team meetings to develop new or modified engineering designs. Prepare CAD files for team approval and monitors design release.

10% - Prepare review presentations for internal and external customers. Prepare engineering reports and supporting documents for the documentation of design intent, tolerance studies, engineering analyses, or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an appropriate discipline and two (2) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

    Additional Requirements/Preferred Qualifications:

    • General understanding of aerospace materials and manufacturing processes (welding, brazing, machining, heat treating) is necessary.
    • Strong mechanical engineering background with knowledge and understanding of structural sizing, heat transfer, and fluid flow principles.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.
    • Working knowledge of CREO Pro-Eng or Siemens NX parametric CAD modeling and Windchill PLM is desired.
    • Experience in the design and development of mechanical systems and a working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 is required.
    • Experience with aerospace valves, injectors, combustion chambers, nozzles, high speed inlets, or gas turbines is beneficial.
    • General component and system level knowledge of rocket and/or ramjet propulsion hardware is desirable.
    • Prior experience with propulsion system integration with flight vehicles and test facilities is beneficial.
    • An advanced degree or coursework toward an advanced degree is a plus.

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
