    Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Material and Process Engineer to join our Huntsville, Alabama location. We are seeking a Materials Engineer with non-metallics experience to support new product development, as well as ongoing production programs. Experience with ceramic matrix composites, refractory materials, and other high-temperature materials strongly desired.

    This position may be filled at this level, or one level higher.

    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    Under general supervision of the assigned Chief Engineer and/or Chief Project Engineer, apply materials and processes (M&P) engineering principles, design for six sigma techniques, lean manufacturing process knowledge, and sound decision-making disciplines to perform the following duties:

    60% - Develop and characterize ceramic matrix composites, refractory materials, polymeric matrix composites, elastomers, fibers, resins, ablatives, and adhesive bonding systems. Identify, develop, and/or release material properties to support design analysis. Develop production processes for implementation and transition to production. Participate in design reviews and customer technical interchange meetings. Support design process by providing material selection recommendations, reviewing design drawings, reviewing manufacturing planning, providing supplier technical support, and supporting Engineering Review Boards.

    30% - Perform engineering analysis of nonconforming hardware including coordination of analysis for disposition of Material Review Board documents. Maintain interactions with customers on materials-related issues such as materials obsolescence. Conduct project progress reviews to ensure program control. Analyze and document technical conclusions of hardware failure.  Conduct failure analysis to determine root cause.

    10% - Active involvement in materials and processes technical community.

    Requirements

    Requires a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science or Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering or similar major, and a minimum of two (2) years of directly related technical experience in Materials Engineering (or ean quivalent combination of education and experience). Advanced degree desirable. Strong project planning, critical thinking, written and oral communication skills are required.

     

    US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

     

     

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

    Employee may need to work near moving mechanical parts and in loud working conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. Laboratory work will also be required to evaluate materials and failure analysis.

     

    In addition, employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.  May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
