    Aerojet Rocketdyine is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) Laboratory discipline for our growing facility in Canoga Park, California (Los Angeles area).

     

    This Materials and Processes Laboratory Services Engineering management role provides leadership support and is accountable for the technical engineering management of our space propulsion programs that require selection, evaluation, and design requirements of materials and processes used to produce rocket engines.  This position requires knowledge and experience with space propulsion environments applicable to launch vehicles. 

     

    This position may be filled at this level or one level higher.

    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    70% - Plan, administer, and manage all material testing related activities, programs, and staff of the Materials Laboratory Services group within Materials and Processes Engineering at the Los Angeles site. Primarily responsible for direct management over professional and technical staff in the following areas:

    • Plastics, Lubrication & Surface effects Laboratory (Process);
    • Tensile & Instrumental Analysis Laboratory (Process);
    • Analytical Chemistry & FTIR Laboratory (Process);
    • Scanning Electron Microscope Lab (Process).

    The manager will assure timely laboratory services to all Aerojet Rocketdyne programs i.e. production support, R&D projects, anomaly resolution, and cross sites support as needed. Provide material testing support to Operations, Engineering activities, design consultation in materials and processes selection to achieve the desired performance characteristics of hardware for all Aerojet Rocketdyne programs including liquid propulsion systems for RS-68, RS25, AR-1, Orion, RKV and other liquid propulsion systems as required within budgetary and schedule constraints. Activities include review of supplier’s material data pack, process development testing support, materials evaluation, and the preparation of specifications to support these activities as required. Good technical documentation of all decisions is also required. Ensure preservation of the Company’s intellectual property through documentation of current processes and methods as well as innovative testing processes. Keep abreast with the latest developments in materials testing and process technology through supplier interaction, University contacts, and industry peers.

     

    20% - Perform functional management responsibilities, including program staffing and performance, employee skill and career development, employee motivation, performance evaluation, salary planning, work prioritization and technical oversight of employee work product. Accountable for technical engineering management of projects and/or proposals in the areas of development, design, analysis, and production in accordance with company goals, policies, and schedules. Responsible for the department financial performance and mitigation to ensure department reporting metrics are in-line with established goals and plans.

     

    10% - Provide short and long-range planning for engineering operations and implement approved plans; plan and direct the development and implementation of department systems, methods, standards, practices, and procedures; act as liaison between engineering staff and other organizations, and assure that activities within defined scope are accomplished in accordance with company policies, sound business practices and are in compliance with applicable regulations and requirements.

    Requirements

    Requires a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or similar discipline and at least of 9 years of progressive experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    A Master's degree in one of the above disciplines is preferred, but can be an MBA.

     

    US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

     

     

    Work Environment and Physical Requirements

    Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
