    Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks a Sr. Manager of Safety, Health and Environment (SH&E) for our Canoga Park, California facility.

    The successful candidate will be a proven effective leader with substantial safety and environmental regulatory compliance experience. The candidate is expected to lead a team of SH&E professionals and is responsible to design, develop, implement and oversee the site's environmental, health and safety programs and processes to safeguard employees and the surrounding communities and to ensure all activities are operated in compliance with all regulatory and company requirements. This position is responsible for supporting managers and individual contributors by directing SH&E processes. The candidate provides short and long-range tactical and strategic planning for SH&E processes and implement approved plans; provides technical leadership and functional guidance to the Space Business Unit and Los Angeles site; ensures that quality control procedures are executed to monitor all aspects of regulations; establishes and maintains regulatory compliance calendars; coordinates audit programs within the organization to identify and control significant loss producing exposure; keeps informed on all existing and proposed changes in environmental regulations; executes SH&E leading indicator metrics; and, promotes communication programs to enhance and encourage a strong SH&E culture based on the foundation of employee involvement.

    Position reports directly to the Aerojet Rocketdyne Corporate Senior Director of SH&E and in a matrix capacity to the Los Angeles Operations (Canoga Park) Site Director.  


    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    100% - The Senior Manager of Safety, Health and Environment will:

    • Define, create, implement and measure an annual plan based on continuous improvement.
    • Develop innovative solutions for difficult and complex SH&E problems.
    • Provide effective direction, leadership and team building.
    • Manage employees, contractors and consultants and complete associated administrative tasks, including the ability to select, appraise, motivate, and develop direct reports.
    • Provide technical and administrative guidance for activities in defined scope of responsibilities.
    • Communicate effectively with all levels of management and individual contributors.
    • Communicate highly technical concepts clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
    • Develop and administer a department budget and work with direct report staff and/or managers/supervisors in program budget development and administration.
    • Establish, monitor, and control projects/ budgets and schedules to meet goals and objectives.
    • Perform staff evaluations and oversee and direct staff development and employee training.
    • Review and interpret impact of legislative changes.
    • Manage the development and presentation of studies and reports.
    • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all levels within the organization, other agencies, government officials and the public.
    • Maintaining the privilege on matters being addressed with Legal.
    • Foster ethical conduct, practices and personal integrity throughout the Company to ensure the ability to attract and retain employees.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Determines organizational objectives, interprets the policies of the company and delegates assignments to direct report managers or supervisors.
    • Establishes organizational policies and interprets, executes and recommends modifications to the policies of the Company.
    • Provides technical direction and leadership on SH&E issues.
    • Reviews overall budget, schedules and performance standards.
    • Develops long-range technical and administrative plans, goals and strategies.
    • Establishes optimum budget allocations for department, including managing overhead allocations and expenditures for department.
    • Manages the annual operating plan commitments for their respective organization.
    • Establishes policies, procedures and/or activities to comply with applicable statutes and regulations.
    • Ensures that customers (both internal and external) are well-served through provision of high quality guidance and technical services delivered in a timely manner.
    • Directs the overall function of ensuring compliance with consent decrees and/or agency Orders and Directives.
    • Ensures that significant risks associated with the facilities or properties of the Company, programs and activities are identified and avoided or mitigated to the extent practical by maintaining effective legislative and regulatory monitoring and response, audit and self-inspection, spill and clean-up, remediation and permitting and monitoring database systems.
    • Manage operation of complex site industrial waste water treatment plants.


    Requires a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline and 14 years of progressive experience and responsibility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Candidate is expected to operate effectively in a team environment.
    • US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or Certified Hazardous Material Manager.
    • Experience/knowledge/training in OSHA General Industry and Construction Regulations and OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) program.
    • Experience/knowledge of environmental regulations (i.e., air, water/stormwater, waste, remediation, SPCC, EPCRA/SARA) including permitting and compliance.
    • Ability to effectively lead in a team environment.
    • Advanced degree in an appropriate SH&E discipline.
    • 24- or 40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.
    • Firefighter and/or hazmat/spill response training, experience, and knowledge.

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

    Employees in this position must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Requires the ability to travel by air and auto. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization. Los Angeles is a traditional 9/80 work schedule.


    Additional Requirements:

    May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, respiratory protection, and shop coat. May require the ability to respond to emergency events in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER). Requires ability to participate and/or manage emergency response, in accordance with AR site Emergency Response Plan(s). Ability to work in field on uneven terrain in extreme environments as much as 25% of job. Extreme environments, including heat (>100 degrees F), cold (<32 degrees F), rain, etc.
